Emperor Alamgir II ruled over the Mughal Empire from 1754 to 1759. By this point, the empire had shrunk to an area around Delhi. A last-ditch effort was made in his reign to recover Punjab, with disastrous consequences, including the plunder of Delhi by Afghan forces. The treasury was empty and the realm witnessed its worst period of mismanagement under the premiership of Imad-ul-Mulk. That same Wazir had him assassinated in 1759 over suspicions of his collusion with Ahmad Shah Abdali against himself.
